Wonderful pictures David.The welcome shade of a tree is one of the great pleasures in life and a lot of people forget the relief of a canopy on sunny days.

Interesting to see the level of light and dark on both the southern and northern aspect and to consider the effect this has on the saproxylic species (beetles and fungi) that may be found using either side of the wood volume.

Attended a Ted Green seminar on tree archeology at Barchams today and one of his slides showed sheep taking advantage of the shade of a giant wind turbine just like they do with trees. It would be kinda cool to see a time lapse of the sheep moving with the shade through the day.

 

These are very similar shots to the one Ted showed that I nabbed off the web.

The shade given from the canopy of a cities mature tree population is priceless.

Not being argumentative Sean, but I find that the intolerance to shade is one of the most common reasons given for removal.

 

It's hard to dispute on a wet, overcast day in Manchester, to extol the benefit of shade you need sun first!

Ha Ha fair point although ive sheltered from  many a downpour under a tree.
