Aesculus x carnea with canker

Hi All,

I was asked to have a look at this A. x carnea with canker, my initial reaction was i,ve never seen one fail with canker alone.

But this seems to have significant issues at the base.

Has anyone seen a failure with these symptoms?

Fairly high occupancy rate.

Sorry about the poor shots, I,ll try and get some more.

Cheers,

L.

IN my previous TO life, we had several Red HCs street trees whihc failed, by snapping off up the stem, assoicated with this canker. In each case there was significnat decay too, rather than just cambium dysfunction.

Never seen it so close to the base tho.

At least a case of careful, regular monitoring I would suggest.

Cheers..

Paul

Hi Paul,

Any evidence of the failures being atributed to one of the lignin decayers like Ganoderma ?

.

Hi David,

Not that I was aware of. That said, at the time, I would have mainly established this by the presence of fruiting brackets either on the tree at the time or from previous inspections. I cannot recall either.

Regards..

Paul

Cankers are very much common place on this hybrid and due to bud proliferation, they form an the main trunk and branchwork (a distinguishing feature in winter for identification purposes). It isn't known what does this but it is thought to be viral and this hybrid is also more susceptible to HCBC

that tree above looks to be suffering these "bud proliferation cankers" at the base where yearly epicormic is situated, and as stated i wouldn't be too worried about failure, more vascular cambium tissue shutting down as david says:biggrin: (or HCBC!)
