Tyres make a massive difference too. So many 4x4s have useless tyres on them. LRs usually have tyres with some off-road ability. My ol' 4.0 litre Jeep has brilliant tyres, diff locks, good articulation, good ground clearance and a low CofG, and will probably go anywhere.

A turbo Daily 4 by 4 is about all I figger fits between a LR and a Mog.

Well after the startlingly obvious "G" Wagen of course.

And tyres tyres tyres tyres tyresz tyres etc etc etc

Could consider one o the cast Army Renault Dodge 4 by 4's that Withams has a pile o at present. I suggest this precisely because they were bought to replace LR's that did not have enough cargo/weight capacity.

Ugly as sin, and I have no idea as to their off road capabilities

but some were also equipped as standard wit hydraulic winches to the front

worth considering

About £3000/£3500 if I recall

and

beam axles are NOT necessary

Ever driven a Prinzguar off road, proper awesome, plus absolutly fablous on road, drive like a comfy car.......absolutly great kit.

Pity it were petrol but I dare say a gas conversion could make sense.

A lot of it comes down to the driver - big tyres and diff locks just mean you can drive a bit less carefully.

 

I've had a bit of all sorts over the years and for off the shelf ability it seems to be either defender or jimny/SJ. Jap pickups need a bit of weight in the back to be any good but will always suffer with low ground clearance and big over hangs.

 

Not that it would do what you want, but a subaru legacy will go places a hilux won't if it's just a case of needing traction :lol:

 

My old 130 used to do pretty well for it's size though.

G Wagen if you can find one and afford one. I really, really, really, really, really wish I still had my 300GD. Slow as a dog but there was literally no stopping it anywhere. Brilliant machines.

 

They are selling left hooker g wagons that are ex army for 5k in land rover monthly!!
