Finally paid my tax from jan 31st

Got a £500 fine/interest on top.

Now I've always paid up on time in the past but plain missed it this year-confused by my accountant.

£500 for a one off mistake

Does anyone on here know if this is standard practice and should I have argued a bit more to get the fine reduced.

I know this is a bit like stable door/horse thinggy but at least I'll know next time

It's a £100 fine every time they send a letter out for late payment, not a £100 a year, if they send a letter every week then it's £100 a week fine. The idea is to get you to pay up on time every time. This is why they hate the self employed, and chase them up relentlessly. I know, I used to leave it til the last minute then panic. Not any more, it's sorted out well in advance, saves me a fortune in fines :laugh1:

A £500 fine suggests this is a second offence ie you did the same last year in failing to meet a deadline. Maybe last year your accountant accepted that he filed late and paid your fine bet he wont be so keen this time. If it is only 1st time then appeal as HMRC record keeping is atrocious. If all else fails and it was your accountants fault then claim off his professional indemnity insurance thats what it is there for.

i was fined £100 last year for a late return, whilst moaning about it in the pub a chap came up and told me as soon as id paid up the tax owed in full i could get the fine back (im guessing he was an accountant)

anyway paid the fine, then got my tax sorted then phoned the hmrc and simply asked for the fine back, got a cheque within the week!
