Fomes fomentarius

In The Netherlands and Germany, this is becoming a common phenomenon, a beech woodland with young beeches, killed by F. fomentarius, losing their bark while still standing. The same goes for woodlands, which are dominated by birches of all ages also under attack of Piptoporus betulinus and/or Daedaleopsis confragosa.

David,

Quite a job the "arborist's little helper" already had been doing.

Absolutely.

I once thought this fungus as rare at my site, but now having numerously found it on Oak, Beech, Birch & Poplar I now see it as a major coliniser here and the woodys must love that.

It would be very interesting to compare the woodpecker populations of both this site & a similar sized site without as much Fomes evident.

In The Netherlands, along with Quercus rubra and Q. robur brown rotted by Laetiporus sulphureus and/or Daedalea quercina or white rotted by Phellinus robustus.
