Thats great if you start at 18, and spend 10 years or more doing the above. For someone who is retraining they may not have time to go the long haul route.

They should look for another career then :001_tongue:

If you aint gonna do it properly :001_smile:

I wouldnt retrain to be a tree officer, from being a self employed subbie. Have you seen the pittance they get paid?

I know!!! I really don't get the appeal?

Is it a power thing?

Or you wanting an easy life?

Thanks everyone for your coments, I have taken on bits from each response. I guess one of my big issues is that I need work and working one day a week is not paying the bills, hence why i am trying to think of other tree type jobs to tie me over till the credit crunch has blown over.

Stocker is right, nothing wrong with starting at the bottom as a tree-grunt and dragging a bit of brush. It will give you a better grounding in treework generally. You can learn a hell of a lot from the graft-end of a treework company and take it with you when you work as a tree-officer.

You'll also get respect from Contractors if you've 'walked the walk' !. Get your boots on mate....
