My first chipper

Right i found my small chipper and jumped on it!! Its a Bearcat 71020 chipper shredder with blower unit. Had it out today for the first time and the shredder is evil!!! just rips small brash through upto 1"1/2 to 2" but the chipping chute which is 5" wasn't doing to well. I had to push the branches through it and it just seemed hard work really. I got it back to the yard and removed the blades (4 of) and thgey seemed battered. So i gave them a sharpen up refitted and tested. It faired better but the chips where like dust really fine. How can i get it to perform like a timberwolf 13/75g or 18/100g because they seem to chip it up on there own no need to force it through and the chips are quite big???? Is a new set of blades needed.

 

Apart from that im well chuffed it towed well at 55-60mph all the way from Coventry back to Blackpool. The 20hp kohler v twin starts on the key first turn and it never laboured once.

 

I'll get some pics up but any advice regarding blades chipping chute is welcomed.

Iv been looking for a 18/100g for ages and none came up. And I obviously don't have a few grand laying about or I'd have bought something better. I'm not going to be keeping it forever but I have just parted with my money and it needs to pay for itself. So I want it to perform as intended before I sell it on probably at a loss and then still can't find a suitable chipper in budget.

The blades need to be very sharp on those machines. If they are sharp the stuff will drop through a bit better, if you are having to push stuff in (not good for your hands) then they need sharpening. The shredder will blow out dust, makes good compost. The chipper should produce chip though.

I wouldn't of bought it in the first place mate, you'd of been far better off keeping you're money in the bank and carrying on saving up until you could get the machine you wanted.

I've never seen one of these before but does it have an anvil that the chipping blades would cut against? If so, it needs to have a nice square corner on it.

The other possibility is that the blades have been sharpened so many times that the gap is now to big and they need to be replaced.

I wouldn't of bought it in the first place mate, you'd of been far better off keeping you're money in the bank and carrying on saving up until you could get the machine you wanted.

 

How do you earn money with no chipper. to be fair a bearcat would have been pretty low on my list thou

i think bearcats are quite well made. Sharp sharp sharp - thats the key. Think oldmilltrees is bang on. Wide forks are a pain, and hey, you'll just keep more logs. Turn down the jobs that involve hawthorn n blackthorn though, or bring the trailer/have a bonny instead!
