Hobbs or GRCS or other

have just made a box to fit the capstan as it was all being carried in a bread crate and starting to show signs of damage how do you all transport yours and like you i would have to buy another if this one got trashed or nicked they are a very versatile tool and has saved many times the cost

It would be good if any HOBBS/GRCS users out there could put together a workshop, regarding how to use and get the best out of these great bit of kit..

 

I'm sure a workshop such as this could also bring in a few quid to its organisers!

 

Would you be up for it Reg...:wave:

 

i would be up for that would be good to have grcs and hobbs together and i am not that far from reg and believe i am grcs competent have used ours plenty in the last year

Has to be GRCS every time, been using one for a bit, if there is the right rigging possibility’s you can slowly fell a tree, and good for removing half a tree in one go, what I have found though is if you are winching up a limb try to clear the very upper canopy first. (Were your pulley block is)

I spotted this winch at a TCIA show.

When the guy was unpacking it, the capstan got bent from simply being carried around.

It is made of super thin alum.

 

Also, any chunks, bits of tree, pine cones, whatever will come right down and crush the super delicate parts on the engine.

 

Usually with tree work, communication with the climber is essential.

With that engine running you cant hear anything

 

 

those things are junk.We wore a groove in the Alloy behind the capstan in a day.Oh,just before the Capstan actually fell off.:thumbdown:

I've just made this one up ,it's 15 mm ali plate with a 2nd hand 2 speed Barlow self tailing winch on which i got from the "Chandlery Barge (023804063490)" they have a few in stock and are great to deal with

,i asked for Harken 46 or similar and got this for £200 ,they also have Main sheet pully blocks from yachts for around £50 which are brill for tensioning speed lines !.I hope to put a bollard on above the winch but i hav'nt found any ali tube for the job yet .The rope guide is made from 2 rings from high lift wedges with slits in oppersite sides to get the rope in ,hope to give it a proper try after me holls!

Looks good to me mate. Who did your welding?

My mate ali welds for a scaffolding firm and they let him borrow the workshop when he needs it ,he did a great job and only wanted a few pints ,i cut all the plate and he welded it on ,in exchange for my bit of plate another firm wanted 2 sheets 1.5 m square ripping in to 20cm strips ,it was a right chew on even wit a plasma cutter !

Very nice finished product Mr Brown, Still no joy from my man with the rope but I will keep trying it will be ideal for the machine.:thumbup1:
