Hi that is a nice display of PLASHING.

I think that started across the water mainland Europe France Germany Netherlands.

Pleaching is what I do with hawthorne hedges

But when you go to Collingham hedge comp they call it plashing

It's very common in the Netherlands, in public spaces (council owned green spaces, car parks etc, not just parks) as well as round private gardens etc.

 

Another form currently popular in NL is where all the branches are trained and pruned to the same height to form a flat disk of green on a trunk, no idea what it's called though?

 

i know a hedgelayer who has been to holland for comps they lay different over there they pleach up the stem instead of down at bottom and use one of the stems as the binder. yet to see it done. but pictures look very good. like to have a go doing it

Pleached or espalier My old granddad had some pear trees worked like that . Kept tghem flat against the boundary . Worked well . I was only little .......

These are indeed espaliers, normally used to improve fruit yields in formal gardens and orchards. Pleaches or pleaching tend to refer to a partial cut as used in hedgelaying to enable the limb or tree to carry on growing after being laid into the desired position.
