they are field voles you want to bait live catch traps with rabbit food mix and hay, they will just be eating the grass Dean, hence the nicely clipped circles around the entry holes.

oh and the kicker to all this

Field Voles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Would an abundance of kestrel and owl boxes help in the long run, and be legal?

I want rid because it's a lawn, it's on a clayish soil and I want as many worms as possible. I don't mind the odd one but this is an infestation. It isn't helping with drainage as you may think and the ground collapses under your feet.

I mow it once a fortnight and have to plough the mower through mound after mound.

I'll have a go with some traps to see what they turn up.

Sent from my iPhone cos it was

Fair enough, I wondered as it just sounded like a grassed field area...

Forget all the homespun remedies, they don't work. Over here there is a device called a "detauper" Taupe meaning mole. It's a little explosive cartridge that you put in the hole and it explodes when it touches a plunger, too complex to explain but very simple to use.

Since I bought this little miracle I have blown up a dozen or so and my garden is clear, I cannot speak too highly of them!
