I have just spoken to the council and they seem to think its a Walnut??? im strugging between, Norway maple, tree of heaven and now walnut?? how difficult is it to tell them apart with just the stem?? or are there any tell tales that will give it away?? i might be able to nip to the gardeners yard and get one of the smaller logs they removed? the stems not getting delivered until friday now and its pecking my head to say the least!!

Agreed, not walnut..

Walnut has a distinctive darker inner grain that you can't miss

Tree of heaven is very light wood and the buds will be furry brown

Ash wood is also very pale but the middle can have a pinkish tinge when cut and the buds are black (common ash)
