So............... i've been watching this Monolith, in terms of how what's been left, is going to naturally fail/dismantle.

The Oak was heavily reduced at top, and the side above the target 2 years ago, and as the Tree was still just about holding on toward the south and above nettles, we left those branches alone, for additional habitat biomass.

It gave up completely last year, and last week the lowest limb had it's first fracture.

Even with such long & heavy dead laterals, I'm suprised it's happened so soon.

any evidence of bats using that tree? Looks like its got good roosting potential as it starts to fracture.

Didn't see any of the classic signs whilst I was up there dismantling Danny, such as staining, scratches & flies around hole/crack entrances.

But obviously that doesn't mean that there aren't any already on this Tree.

I know it's on the evening bat walk route, so i'll ask if anyone has picked up any frequencies around the specific area.

Of the 17 species of Uk Bats, Greater London hosts 7/8 of them, and here at the Heath we have most of those.

whats youre opinion on how far down the cuts should go monkeyd? i try to aim for 6 ft of artificial fractures to try and avoid the bart simpson look which seems to be common round here!

Appologies Josh, I must of deleted the draft reply a few days back, thought I had posted it.

Variation of depth, length & orientation is the key imo.

Think you're spot on with adding length to fractures.

The Oak above would of had more fractures had it been carried out more recently.

This Oak limb has been reduced due to top-side disfunction & a cavity at the dog leg, above a path & close to the playground.

Have left as partly fractured coronet for purely aesthetic reasons.

It suits it's environment.

Not an everyday climber anymore, but stumbling toward adapting to beter systems.

Difficult for me to justify a new harness/rope, so make do with a fit for purpose all singing all dancing Willans , unlesss the guys aren't in, then I pinch one of the 'motions :sneaky2:

But I am sold on using the Howard hitch and Hc. :thumbup1:

Mr Carrington can take a run and jump
