As anyone ever thought of trying to convert a old forklift into a logsplitter what was your views on giving it a go could it be done ???? some have spare hydraulics 3rd lever hydraulics levers unused etc

I guess it could be done. It's a heavy bit of kit to move around if it needs to go one site and the old forklifts I know are always really smokey. Might need to work down wind.:001_smile:

I assume that you intend to use the forklift ram as fitted, so a 3 tonne forklift will give you 6 tonne force if you disconnect the chains and use the ram force direct, which I presume you would.

Obviousely need to remount the ram upside down etc etc,and provide a guide to keep the blade running straight as the existing fork guides wont suffice for this usuage, I know what I mean but its a bit garbled in the typing

cheers

The pump, and engine (if good) would easily be up to the job, but...

Even the most knackered fork-lift (which will likely have a worn pump and engine) will cost a fair bit, just due to the fact that they weigh so much(scrap). If you can find one with a decent pump and engine for less than £1000 I reckon you're doing well., then you'll have to spend a fair while converting it to how you want it to work etc. That £1000 could buy you a reasonable part of e decent, purpose-built, tried and tested log-splitter.

for £1000 youd get a very good properly made splitter, we got ours for £500 off ebay, needed a few modifications, but split 25 cube of dry logs last week, a lot of it was hard beech.

If you really need to use a splitter you can use ours here. or even come down and have a look at it
