Black cats?

Has anyone got any (big) back cat stories/sightings?

 

I saw one a few years ago, and the subject has fascinated me for ages before that.

I have had black cats my entire adult life, always needed to bring them in for Halloween and the night befor becuse there are evil people that do terrible things to animals in general and esp. during this period of time. Happy to report my Cats over the years lived long and healthy lives.

Yup. Saw one in Westonbirt Aroretum about 10 years ago. It crossed within 10 metres of me in a major hurry. My previous terrier took off after it yowling like he used to chasing foxes.

 

For a long time i told no one. It was only later on a post pub nocturnal wander there that my anxiety for my dog was noticed. Turned out that my farming friends had also seen them. A contract milker had seen one in the lane and found that the cows were spooked.

 

We all felt that it would have been easier to think we were mistaken but our animals obviously saw them too

one was allegedly seen near skipton last august and in the same week about 5 miles away in west marton another sighting was reported.So there could be some out there.

Friends in Charlbury returned home one day to find the police in their garden after the next door neighbour had seen one and rung them.

 

Our (domestic - sort of) cat is black, and has always had the ability to hide extremely well, to the point where we have had neighbours who didn't even realise we had a cat after several years. As such, it wouldn't surprise me if there were a few big cats lurking out there that didn't want to be seen.

ELG, I too have a domestic black cat Benny, but in Britain we generally use 'black cats' as a phrase to mean 'big' black cats, like panthers etc.

You must have some stories from your side of the pond re cougars etc?

 

The government and their agencies seem intent on denying the existence of large feline predators at loose in the British countryside, I'm interested to know what others have seen.

Thanks Mark, Yes we have Florida Panthers and in the wild they are extremely rare to see night or day. I did see a Florida panther once about 25 years ago while out for a run with my cross country coach. It was in the afternoon during the summer and this cat in one leap jump across a single lane dirt road perhaps 10' in front of us. We were both so startled that we at first did not know what we had just witnessed.

Nah, I don't think so. Someone would have shot one in a lamp in the 20+ years they have been talked about. A few years ago a chap called Hennie Du Rand (famous for tracking down and killing man eating leopards) was brought over from SA to track one. He found nothing that made him think of one.

 

 

I think some may be about ,maybe 2 or 3, but I don't think they are a breeding population or anything like that. It also intrigues me that everyone sees black ones, black big cats are pretty bloody rare in the world - they are normally spotty!
