We came accross this old girl while coppicing last week must be 250/300 years old and then pre-coppice who knows

That last date looks like 1882. How big's the stem? That's 130 years of incremental growth!

the last date is 1882 there are some other older dates on it we will be clearing around it on monday will see if i can get a pic of a olden the stems range from 20 inches to 26

there are some more hollies in the wood but under the coppice they are hard to get at , the little branch cut at the front is 58 years old

will have to motivate my lazy self and pop to local property to take some photos of their hollies, dont know age but ones i cut up in december were bar and some on 357. also get pics of the ones where i work. cracking photos though

How could those dates still be showing after over 100 years surely they'd have callused over.

 

Not doubting the age of the tree or digging any one out here just seems unlikely to me, how much girth would they have put on in that time?

Look up the Burk & Wills expedition in Australia 1860/61 tree initials from 1861

Unless I've found the wrong thing it looks to me like the burke and wills one is on a wound on the stem rather than the bark and cambium.

 

Not trying to start a fight or anything just waiting for some pva to dry.
