It wasn’t nicked or lost. Back in the 80’s Thatcher sold it off piecemeal to her mates while we were distracted with the “loadamoney” economy.

You are right, industry had become tubby and militant and the unions weren’t innocent in that but it was Thatcher that broke the unions and sold the carcass of our manufacturing to anyone that would buy it.
