Ash vs oak

Recommended Posts

Got an ash and an oak about 3 ft apart. Both pretty young trees but obviously this isn't going to work in the long run. My thought is to coppice the ash as its south of the oak. Is there any future in the ash as a coppice stool? Or should I just let them get on with it?

Depends what the long term plan for the area is.

If it were me, ash will produce firewood in the medium term, oak a nicer tree but any productivity is seriously long term. Thinking about future care, an ash is more likely to require work whereas the oak will more than likely just meander through the years without giving trouble..

If you don't want to do anything or gain anything other than a nice tree, take the ash out now and forget all about it. If you need some timber, leave them both go and take one out later when the situation calls for it...

Weve a stand of hazel, scheduled ancient woodland, oak harvested 30 years ago, never replanted, so now got a mix of ash and oak, fc officer wants ash back, i'd rather put oak back, but hey ho...every ones got their own ideas. as we didn't sign up to the sceme i can put back what i want.....

Sorry, should have explained. The bit up the hill from this is an old pheasant pen full of dead elm and this is due to be cleared and replanted with new ash or hazel coppice, yet to be decided. So one of these trees is going to be retained as a standard in a coppice with standards system. Most of the standards we have in the area are ash so I'm thinking a few oaks might not go amiss.
