At the risk of derailing - the consultation period for the draft BS3998:2008 ended on the 5th November (after an extension from the 31st Oct).

The draft is still floating about somewhere as a .pdf but I have no idea when the finished BS will be on the shelf so to speak...

I wondered as I was writing about the habitat thing.

After all in a woodland, things do fall over etc all the time.

Perhaps I'm being pedantic. I don't see Shigo as the be all and end all, and I've spiked on trees that weren't coming down myself under certain circumstances.

Yep. this is a location specific thing, I can live with it. Although I still find it a bit ugly to look at. I do see that something had to be done and that to take it down completely would lose the habitat value.

Re the BS thing.

I got as far as hitting the buy it button on the BSI website, then couldn't find my credit card so thought I'd do it in a minute after finishing my reply in the thread. So it looks like its available for £20 or £10 for members (of BSI). It says theres a hard back as well. Haven't been back yet to see if you can actually buy it or not yet, my plastic is around here somewhere.

So when I said it's in the post I was jumping the gun a bit.

Mr masterblaster 'why the hooks?' . Do you call climbing spikes, gaffs etc - hooks. Not sure what you mean.

Don't buy it!!! The draft will be updated and amended - may even be a completely different beast.

Expect the final product to be about £90. :scared1:

Don’t give them your money yet, it will be a while before it goes to print, think months rather than weeks and I can guarantee you it will be more than £20.00

To be fair to moneyd and the team. The guy up the tree prob only spiked may be 2 or3 step down so he could put his weight back into his climbing system 4 or 6 small spike hoels arnt going to damage the tree to much when you have just reduced it by more the 50% is it.
