Quick trick for descending.

This will probably work differently with different shape D rings. It works really well on my Tree austria. You pull a bight through the D and clip a caribiner through it. It makes a stitch plate type friction controller. You can then just hold the hitch fully open and control your speed with the tale of the rope. It works well for me but just go steady when you try it first.

Better variation for more control. Not tried on a descent yet but you can brake fully with it where as the above one just slows you. Push bight through D, clip it and then clip in the tail. Then a bit of jiggling to get the caribener in the right place.I think this one is going to be much better.

I've tied a munter / italian hitch to come down ona fair few times, normally from a spar.

Have use munter/italian hitch a few times but also carry a figure 8 which is great. in the past have used the figure 8 to descend out of a 60ft mewp after the boom got stuck at full extension (too fat gits in the bucket lol) and also used it for abseiling down cliff face to clear rhodedenron in mid wales. figure 8 is also useful for improvised lowering (not recommended but got me out of a fix more than once after being sent on jobs with insufficient equipment) and also useful for aerial rescue.

I've got a smallish Fig. 8 robbed out of my rock climbing gear - usually take it up tall things as a rule. Clip under my hitch and away I go - quite often upside down to scare the boss!!
