No they couldn't.

 

They tried a record attempt and the fastest one ever built was in 4 and a bit days. Normal construction time (bearing in mind the whole world was under immense time-pressure) took about 6 weeks.

It was probably overloaded ever hour of its life and ran to many storms.

Welding was still in its infancy but it was fast, if they had used rivets, it would have taken longer to make the ships, which means the war material to england would have been slower to get there, d day might have been later, stalin would have taken more of europe.

But it wasnt the welding that was the problem, the steel wasnt of the right grade and the design caused certain areas to suffer great stress which happened to be where a bunch of welds intersected.
