Best Chainsaw Sharpener

I enjoy hand filing chains, but doing the 114dl chains on the 36" bar gets very boring.

I spent a fair amount of time sharpening chains with a professional Stihl chain grinder in a past job, was taught how to set it up and use it correctly.

I've transfereed this experience over to getting the best out of the £24 Silverline chain grinder I purchased, I couldn't justify spending much on a machine that wouldn't see much use, sure its cheap and flimsy, but with a tiny bit of care we produce a lovely sharp and even chain.

I hit a bit of metal in a big stem with the 36" machine, chain was the most horrendous mess, did a double grind on it with the machine and its back in action - just!

I use carlton chain a 20" loop costs me about £3 when its on special. I think the processor chain was 13" about £1.50. I am not bothered if they sharpenen away quickly on the bench grinder. I have kissed gently on some and gone in hard on others and blued the chain. Once the chain has blued it is as hard as nails and you wont touch it with a hand file but for £1.50 who cares I sometimes get days out of one sharpen if the woods clean.

Change to a blue grinding disk rather than the usual pink ones makes such a difference I use grinder all the time on my harvester chains and makes the job so much easier

good tip i will try and get one for my dusty silverline put it back into use as i now know why my files dulled out etc as i give up trying messing up good chains on a as though the rpm was to fast even if i tried light dabbing a little at a time so to speak i think there ok if you need to recover a damaged chain and seem to get more out of hand filing is it a man thing ??? as i get a better finish i even saved an old bar that i use in the vice to sharpen spare chains up

I don't think you will be able to get anything but pink disks for this grinder - it is the same one that I use - take care and it gives a good finish.

The Portek mini disks fit and are easy to find, I use a cheap diamond file to break the glaze on the grinding wheel and this really helps - the sparks increase 3 fold just after I have done it - just lightly contact the spinning wheel with the file and you get a slight puff of powder and off you go - please wear eye protection when using this type of kit!

You have two thickness disks, one is for 3/8 which is something like 4.5mm and a thinner disk (3.2mm) for 0.325 although the thinner one is for anything like a Picco chain and the thicker one is for the larger 0.325 and 3/8 chains.

The Silverline one comes with the thicker disk as standard.
