Catalytic converter thieves

I had posted elsewhere warning about this going on often in public carparks like supermarkets/shopping centres. (Normal high speed cut saws used) The second issue is drilling plastic fuel tanks and sucking the diesel into a 200ltrs drum in the back of a normal looking vehicle.

Worth reporting to the local Police and scrap place. One in this area now takes pictures of all people bringing in waste and the vehicle so can trace stolen goods. A second local one was closed down due to taking stolen cables from the railways.

Theft of stolen property, IE. Catalytic Converters, cables, etc. has been on the general increase for the last 10 years that I know of here in the states. In many cases the thieves will not even bother taking material to local scrap yards any more. Typically said thieves will sell to someone posing as a buyer of scrap metal this person will pay very high prices for said material and always in cash, no questions asked. This is the start of the "Money laundering" process. Cash is usually very hard to dispose of so Organized crime will buy commodities to turn around at a later date usually with a buyer overseas and since most larger transactions are by wire transfer to where ever the "wash cycle" is complete. A really big problem here in the states and very hard to catch and harder to prosecute. IMO I believe this to a smaller extent is where most if not all stolen Kit reported on this site ends up as well. Stay sharp and always be aware of your surroundings. Never leave any thing for the watchers to see and report for a future theft!

Ive got a Iveco Daily. The cat got nicked on thursday. Its now ended up costing £1100 to replace.

Ive found a system called CAT Guard. Has anyone else used this system. Is it any good?

Now that's low.

I think I would look into getting the cat bypassed and the ecu remapped.

Would be cheaper than £1100 and at least it won't happen again!!!

The exact same thing happened to a mate of mine who owns the same truck for his scaffolding business, they climbed over the bungalow roof to get to it as yard has security fence. Also cost him about the same to get replaced.

Yep, ditch the cat, load of rubbish anyway. If there's lambda feedback from the cat, speak to a specialist who can wire it to a sender. There are lots of "blank cat" fitters around.

Would have been a good idea a while ago but MOT regs are changing from April 2012 (advisory from January) and any vehicle that had a cat fitted from factory that has had it removed will be a reason for failure and from speaking to the mot guy when i was in with the Freelander last week it will be applied retrospectively to all vehicles that had cats fitted from factory

But i am sure the detail is out there on some vosa site somewhere i just have not had chance for an in depth look yet
