Sorry if this has already been discussed (please direct me to correct thread if so) but can anyone enlighten me as to why large numbers of Lleyndii hedges in my area are showing patches of die back. Numerous example locally over last year. It's not due to excessive clipping, some are hedges I maintain and I've been extreeeeeemly careful.

It could be due to having 3 very cold winters in a row. one of my hedges is suffering from it also.

Water freezes in the roots but still evaporates through the evergreen leaves, so it runs our of water and dies. Compare that with deciduous trees who drop their leaves and hence conserve their water.

That is an excellent idea .....has it been proven? how do conifers survive decimation when they grow in frozen soil high on mountain sides...just being curious :thumbup1:

The new disease on the block is Phytophthora lateralis - follow this link to the FCs webpage on it Forestry Commission - News - yorkshire trees hit by new disease

Other diseases also affect cypress trees and cause dieback.

I think it unlikely cold weather would cause this problem especially given the historic weather patterns experienced in this country and the provinence of many of these species.
