Under cut, then top cut made outer means the branch will fall level/flat, watch out for fibres/branch tring to take saw sometimes.

under cut and then top cut made in board is classed as a jump cut i think as i remember when i did the course, branch springs forwards a little when fibres break

As Swinny says: undercut inboard of the top cut means that the branch will (in theory) fall flat. Undercut outboard of the top cut makes the branch tip drop before the whole slides off the stub. Sometimes it is desirable to be able to lower the branch vertically.

In practice I found that the saw often grabbed in the cut when making the top cut with an inboard undercut almost pulling the saw out of my hand. In the end I gave up using the inboard undercut altogether and always used the outboard undercut where this grabbing doesn't happen. Thing is: you can't rely on the branch always dropping flat anyway.

I prefer to do my cuts on the sides rather than over and under, much less chance of the branch snapping off before you're ready to hold and throw it.

Probably best not to do that on your test though!

I think OP is taking about free fall cuts.

Step cuts on the side are for cutting and chucking.
