Just rang up to enquire about getting a CS30/31 certificate. They said yes if you got £715 pounds to spare. I said no sorry. Why is it so expensive? Is there any funding or a cheaper course? I cant afford that amount of money especially with very little on at the minute. Can any one recommend another route? :(

That's how much it cost and that's it, the DWP is putting people through it, but only if you have been signing on the dole for some time.

Work for a company as a trainee, then they can teach you everything you need to know for the assessment which you can do on its own.

The problem is that they will teach you 'tricks' like drop starting your chainsaw!

Have been doing this a long time, but recently work is slack and working for someone requires certification!
If you have experience and know what you're doing then there is no need for you to do an expensive 5-day course that is really designed for novices.

Have a look at the NPTC assessment schedules for CS30 and CS31. You can download them from the NPTC web site. They will tell you exactly what is required - you need to be able to answer all the questions, and demonstrate the things listed.

If you reckon that you can pass, then you could just book the assessments. This will still cost you a couple of hundred quid, but there's no getting away from that.

Alternatively you could look for an instructor who will do a day or two of pre-assessment preparation with you. It will cost, but shouldn't be as much as the full course.

thats cheaper than mine it was £860 cs30/31. I had to do it because my old ticket run out was a basic ground clearing that ive had for years and my insurance didnt wont to cover me.

BUT..you should have in date industry best practice training, with certification as proof, to satisfy insurance companies and realistically your employer too.
