i think some employers would spoil it as much as some workers wouldnt bother, if you have it in you, you will succeed, it is just getting a chance

i think it was the government that paid the wages was it not? ( i may be wrong) i remember back then it just felt like a scam to bring the dole figures down. you had lots of yts lads doing menial tasks that were never going to end up in full time employment.

They would have been better to pay for an apprenticship and commit to one person for the 4 years.

But im sure it worked out for some employers and employees alike.

i done mine in a workcamp (well a government sponsered workshop) building kitchen units and going out to fit them, also done shop fitting but we would arrive with about 20 of us and a couple of joiners and finish it in a day, thinking back it must have killed the local shopfitters work.

i never got the chance to get kept on i done my year then out.

When I left school in the early 90s there was no training schemes widely available for school leavers but my brother and sister who finished school in the late 80s both went into YTS.

My other halfs son is currently at college full time and in his first year recieved £30 a week for doing a level 1 NVQ, Now he has gone to another college to do level 2/3 NVQs and now gets £50 a week.

 

Seems like I got a raw deal when I left school! lol

I got an apprenticeship as an alarm fitter just as yts became New Deal and was on £69.50 a week, i remember it going up to £72.50 a week after 6 months and after 12 months i was out on my ear as the company merged and apprentices let go:sneaky2:

 

Still if that hadn't of happened i wouldn't be where i am today so it wasn't a bad thing all in all and the apprenticeship gave me a job in a industry where you need to DO to learn and not just go to college or do certificates to be qualified.

 

So yes, bring back YTS/Apprenticeships

That would have been easier, i knew guys that got community service one had to do 100 hours working in the local swimming pool
