Most of the ones I have seen are beech. It's more close grained than acers and therefore more hygenic.

:confused1: Really??

I've never seen a Beech one, they were generally scraped clean, I think Sycamore takes being scraped better.

I was actually working for a woman who has an antique business yesterday and she asked me to leave her a 4' length of Sycamore for her to get made into BB, because she has to buy the Sycamore she uses in.

Think you're right Dave, just had a look online and it seems the really expensive ones are maple. I have seen some beech ones though. Reckon beech would be better than Syc.

I have plenty of dry beech but it's in lengths 2.4m by 20cm and 2" and 3" thick.

You could prob find a but this wide and long but would prob have a few splits and cracks in it.

think you`ll find there beech,,,,but hey,,we all think were experts,,,,usaully end grain beech,,,:001_huh:

I really don't think I'm an expert, I'm only speaking from my own experience (please see my signature)

I've seen a lot of BB over the years and every one I have seen has been Sycamore.

It could be a regional thing, different county's/areas of Britain may use different timber.

I have one made of sycamore and I used to have one made of beech. My mate works for a cabinet maker and they make them from sycamore something to do with being more hygienic.
