I would have cut it and said 'you'll thank me later!'

 

Funny you say that, last time I saw something similar it was a super short bury (like 6 inches) on a 16 strand splice. I told the guy if he cut it there and then I would give him my spare lanyard to replace it.

 

As to the dodgy looking screwgate, yeah it looks pretty rooted.

I can beat that, guy i know uses 15year old friction cord, properrrr job

 

I took my 17 year old 8 strand nylon multiplat in the day our kit was due to be lolered , chatted with the inspector , told him that it had been stored in the loft for the last 10 years and it passed with him stating there was nothing wrong with it .

Can't remember if it was 6 months later or a year but it eventually failed even without any damage or extra visible wear.
