Ok my guesses are:

Oak 1 - Quercus macrolepis

Oak 2 - Quercus cerris

Oak 3 - Quercus robur (or at least a hybrid between Q. robur and Q. petraea)

Oak 4 - Quercus palustris (or possibly Q. ellipsodalis)

Scott i'll have a look at yours now:biggrin:

Hi Rob,

I have it on good authority that a hybrid Q. petraea x robur is called Quercus x rosacae I will recheck my notes but I recently went on a tree ID day with a well known tree and vegatative ident author and he told me this. Interesting but Field Maples and Hawthorns are showing the same trait - lots of hybridising.

Marco, You are right BUT....

In europe Quercus x rosacea is rather rare in its true form as Quercus petraea normally flowers a fortnight or longer AFTER Quercus robur

These two oaks do hybridise regularly though but tend to be intermediate in characteristics

Any winter twigs out there?

I took these today, in my own garden in Lincolnshire.

I've been quite amazed by it, it was planted last winter and did nought untill part of it suddenly flushed into leaf in October!
