Unimog?Worth the dosh?

Hello,I'm thinking about buying a unimog with an attached pto driven chipper.Reason is I work in area's of tight acess and have had 11 years or reversing chippers.Tell me please any pit falls or experiances you've all had

I sed to work for co. that had unimogs, it seemed a great machine most of the time. Its limitations were mainly that when the buck was loaded (approx 7 cubic m) it was top heavy, causing to lurch and sway on the road. Although its an Ag vehicle, its more of a compromise between a truck and tractor, doing neither job brilliantly. Parts are expensive, and wear and tear seems to happen quickly. They do seem to be almost a status symbol for tree companies tho, and are pretty cool.

Ha ha, Pro in my opinion, Ag registered, goes places trucks don't but not as good off road as you might think due to top heavyness.

 

Carry more than a 3.5t and cheaper to run.

 

I've run two and never (touch wood) had major problems.

 

One was a U1000 which was good but ran out of puff now we have a U1200 which has a turbo and more umpff. It's used every day and will fit anywhere a transit will. We have a TP230 side feed 9" chipper (not from atkinsons) which means road side work is great.

 

The major down side of mogs is loading logs but i can live with that.

They are also a great talking point and advertisment for your business. We are constantly being told that it makes us look professional and get lots of calls through being seen out and about and on jobs.

 

Everything in this industry is a compromise, i've run vans, little (gay ) chippers and tractors. Unimogs are the best for domestic work. Not sure how it would work in a company where various staff drive the machine. Their are only two or three of us and I allways drive the mog. One driver means less wear and tear and you know when something sounds amiss.

Ive run U1000 and a U1750. Both gave me endless problems - brakes, hydraulic leaks and weak springs the main culprits although loads of tiny irritating problems. They were nowhere near powerfull enough, did'nt have the capacity I wanted, and would barely do 30mph when fully loaded or towing a (proper) trailer.

 

I'ts just my opinion though, as some people love them. I think the people that have them would love a proper truck even more though...

 

Now I run a 6x4 log truck, and a mercedes 814D chip truck - 12m3 capacity, massive pulling power, 70mph, and will go anywhere a transit will.

I love it when you and I get on the subject of Mogs lol.

 

Mine does 45mph when towing a 10t grain trailer full ish of logs and does 58 on dual carriageways empty. Because of the bouncing 40-45 on A roads is about all you'd want to do.

i had a u1000 now have 1600. for me it is the pefect machine, i run a 12inch chipper on it and it tows a crain trailer. parts are not had to get and not as expencive as some will say.mine goes off roud alot. if they sute your work there excelent.
