chain oil

No. I have been doing this for several years now, and a mate has been doing it for over 20 with no ill effects. I do remove all the casing on the climbing saw once a year to check, but there is rarely anything to worry about, and TBH the saving over 'real' oil would pay for a new saw probably.:001_smile:

You may find veg oil is better for you and your saw. If you leave the branded mineral stuff in the sun for a week have you seen the black muck that settles in the bottom.

I do think its better for the saw- the chains seem to run free-er and cooler with it too.

I should add that chainsaw carvers should steer clear of it, as due to the way they use their saws, i.e with the bar NOT buried in the wood- using one side of the bar or just the bar nose etc- the saw does get sprayed with veg oil that bakes on the fins and the saw will sieze through overheating.

We use Stihl Bio. Expensive and easy and no problems. The blokes ballistics smell bad enough without getting second hand chip fat all over them and the seats in the trucks.

When I first started we used to use second hand engine oil. Carconogenic, I'm told now. Also, as it has no anti-fling properties it goes everywhere and as it generally has minute bits of metal and sump scrunge in it it'll wear our pump, bar and chain.

My old boss uses sump oil, Massive face palm!!! Not only does it make a right old mess its also no good for the saw. Like my old man before I have taken to using veg oil from the shop, smells like a chip shop, but makes your saw cleaner!!

I'll be honest, I used to use it and had no trouble with any part of the saw HOWEVER I was put right by Gensetsteve who pointed out its carcinogenic properties. went and bought some proper chain oil next day.
