Granfors Bruks splitting Axe or Maul ??

The new husky axe and maul aren't bad at all. They are forged, have good handles that don't continue to season and are a touch cheaper than the bruks ones. Just don't use the axe on wedges!!

 

Good point the back of an axe is there as a counterbalance not a hammer, in the past it was often forgewelded on, many new axeheads are cast. If used as a wedge hammer it's the wrong steel against steel combination which will splinter and possibly send out fragments with a risk of eye injury. Old wedges/chisels with 'mushroom tops' are so hard they risk braking off fragments, best to grind the mushroom off and the top of the wedge. Out of interest 'nail hammers' clawheaded are extra hard and are for nails only, or they could splinter.

You could also try the Weald and Downland Museum shop. (Look them up on-line). I've bought a few Gransfors axes off them over the years - they usually carry a good selection.

I use mine for knocking in hi lift wedges too. Excellent maul.

Gransfors maul is a lovely bit of kit for big rounds - it is heavy, though. I'm looking to supplement mine with a lighter splitting axe: ideally another Gransfors but the Husky one is less than half the price and still Swedish steel...

Might be made of Swedish steel but it ain't gonna have been hand forged and sharpened in a vigins thighs.
