What's on your bench today?

It is unusual for the big end to go - only seen one go! These blowers have a cast shroud around the flywheel and the bolts can come loose and clout the flywheel back side - worth checking other than that, worth checking the crank bearings - guess there is quite a load on the impeller side!

Thanks spud, it's defo not a loose screw I have seen that a few times also, there is play when you pull/ push the con rod, never thought of crank bearings :001_rolleyes:

Dodgy crank bearings tend to give a hollow dry rumbling sound, once you have heard one go, you will know the sound forever!

Big ends tend to thump - if you look at the piston through the exhaust port and rotate the crank to and forth, the crank will move but the piston won't if the ends have gone!

I am right, when you gently turn the flywheel back and forth you can feel the play and hear the gap tick tick tick :001_smile:

+1, a buggered big end makes a right noise, similar to kicking a saw over with no muffler, only angrier

Don't write off the crank bearings - strip it down and check the bearings by holding the crank end and moving it up and down and side to side - there should be negligible play!

The bearings on the IPL look like ball races and they usually have no play if they are in good fetttle - easy job to strip the unit and check!

Well, whilst I've come to the conclusion that the Germans are a very anal and precise nation (order anything labeled assembly and you will see!), the Swedish are completely mental! I ordered a crankcase assembly labeled as 'complete', this turned out to be 2 crankcase halves, bearings (fitted), ONE oil seal (fitted), locating lug for the chainbrake (fitted), bar studs (fitted), chain oil breather (fitted), ring for the brake arm (fitted), 3 screws for a generator (XPG), 2 casing lugs and the holder for the spring that stops the brake arm flopping around. This doesn't sound very complete, it doesn't make much sense either!
