How embarrassing I meant Spudulike lol sorry!

 

I would be partial to use petrol over 30days old sometimes. But I also do dry store the saw when I remember to. So in essence I caught this in the early stages of blow by? And by using either aspen 2 or fresh petrol the colour stains won't get any worser?

But whilst we are on the subject.......wait for it..........(Spud knows where this is going)

 

The use of stale petrol can lead to dirty combustion, which in turn can cause the discolouring you have found.

Keeping your petrol fresh will help, it will burn cleaner and develop more power than stale. Anything over 30 days old can be classed as 'stale'

 

And......here we go....the use of Aspen 2 is ideal for someone in your situation. It remains fresh for up to 5 years and burns much more cleanly than even fresh petrol.

Had a Stihl back pack blower in, it was supposed not to start....three pulls later:001_rolleyes: I think these machines are throwing in the towel and running before I get the spanners out:lol:

 

Anyway, gave it a going over, the carb was filthy as were the pre filter and air filter. Checked the tank vent, stripped and cleaned the inside of the carb, the throttle cable was a bit catchy so oiled it and then tuned the carb - all good, starts and runs fine - all good!

The ms250 is done and away. Meter valve was knackerd.

 

The 034 is also back working like the beast she is. Again a meter valve issue. Was too far down so not letting enough fuel in to keep running. Quick adjustment and away it went.

 

All looking good. Also going or be on telly but have to check out the RNLI thread to find out when and why.

The cleaning regime depends on what the saw is doing, I save the US cleaner for the real bad ones, it isn't a magic silver bullet but can sort persistant problems. I never use compressed air on carbs - a little bit harsh IMO.

 

I strip the carb fully before soaking and the length of time depends on how bad I think the carb may be.

 

I usually use white spirit as it works for me but does stink and there is a risk it will vapourise and ignight!

Quick one - what is that red ended thing you use to plug the carb hole when pressure testing - looks like the end of a garden hose??

 

OPEN QUESTION - Do other people use something other than white spirit?

There is proper detergent available for US cleaners, which you mix with water. This reduces the surface tension of the water enabling the US cavitation process to work closer to the object, as well as softening deposits. It is important to have one that is safe for aluminium.

 

I personally would not use white spirit due to the fire risk it poses. especially when heated, as these devices tend to run unattended.

I cannot really recommend one. I bought a 5 litre can when I got my US cleaner. Its labelled all in a foreign language and I cant find the same one on the net. Its probably no better than others but I still have plenty left.

Do a google search, but make sure you get a non caustic one which is safe for aluminium, there are others for steel, rust etc.
