With winter just around the corner and another cold an snowy one expected, i'm looking at buying a gritter/salt spreader for some contract work. I've been looking at the snowex tailgate or bed ones for my pick up....anyone do any gritting ? and what do you use ? also an idea of rates would be helpful ??

Cheers,

Mark

We have a snowex one that's big enough to fit in a navara d40 crew cab bed with a control pod in the front. Holds nearly a ton I think nrates are adjustable, you need less down than you think to be effective.

We also use a tractor trailer spreader that is usually used for sand spreading but can have the rates modified to do salt. That will hold 5 ton. Loaded by the tractor. That was very effective for us.

If we get on the snow/ice too late, our Stihl backpack leaf blower with the high pressure curved flat nozzle blasts ice off our paths proper good. Can then bung salt onto the bare ground the prevent refreeze.

Hopefully getting a plough attachment for the tractor so can do some road clearance round our way. I'm fairly certain though that investing in one will guarantee tropical heat through the winter months, so it's win-win.

you should speak to your local council, they usually supply the plough you just have to mount it and drive it.....:thumbup1:

Funny enough... i was having a conversation about this today! Winter will be on us before we know it!

i know a few people who own alot of public areas. eg big carparks, retail sites, etc. and i'm sure the work would be out there.

Like you, i am finding it difficult to try and price it. would you do it on time, area covered, or grit used??

Have you got any prices for the snowex spreaders??

The snowex spreaders that sit down under tow ball are rubbish. From plastic hopper spliting to replacing the vibrating motor constantly thoughout the season due to corrosion and problems also spinner motor issues. These were all new spreaders at the start of the season. The problem was the road spray getting in. The high mounted snowex seem a lot better however.

Prices for the snoex units are available on the net, but seem quite expensive for the more useable units. I'm sure i saved a site but cant find it, so il have to get back to you on that one. As for costs, i'v decided that it's going to be my day rate + salt + fuel costs, any other way makes it pointless.
