Suburban myth?

Not sure if this is a common landscaping joke, but many years ago When I worked for a gardening firm I was told of the escapades of this old timer labourer. Built like a brick out house and somewhat lacking in grey matter, they arrived at a job to lay a slabbed patio.

After a quick inspection of the back garden the boss says to him "the tools are on the van, go and get the maul"

Five minutes later he appears carrying the entire arsenal of tools, several spades, shovels, rakes, bucket of tools and maul!:001_rolleyes:

Don't know if this was a wind up but I'd love it to be true.

Ah. You mean one of those big black rubber things. I thought they were for fencing.(Unless you mean a rubber mallet). Anyone using one of those big black rubber things to bed slabs could do with getting the levels of the sub-base better to begin with.

Still think it's codswallop.

The ones for fencing are alloy or wooden. The rubber ones are for flagging or curbing, up here we have stone flags that are 6" thick and can weigh over 100KG a small rubber mallet would be useless.

I would imagine that "Maul" and "Mallet" come from the same root wood, they do sound similar.

I've only ever seen one of the big black rubber things used once. (At least the ones I think we're referring to here.) The guy using it was amazing. Whacking in fence posts straight and true.

I've seen big black rubber things used on other websites. 100kgs was about right, but 6" doesn't even come close.)

The only maul I've used is a splitting maul, so I defer to yours and others greater knowledge and experience of the big black rubber thing.
