i could be wrong but i think the monkey puzzle is a native tree of england as you can get whitby jet from the beach which is fossilised monkey.

how much is the stem worth if sold for turning ?

.....introduced to the UK at the end of the 18th century.

.....ball park figure; £10-£20 per ring but variables are where you are - the South-East has loads of M/Puzz for turning - the size of the eyes and trunk diameter.

I'm told that you need a larger than average lathe to turn anything bigger than about 15" dia but there are quite a few about.

I suppose it could be as simple as that. A hard winter and then the long dry period has done a lot of trees over round here.

I'm not looking forward to dealing with it though!

Is it a weekend job? Need a hand?

Rob & Rob,

this is not leakage because of an infection with (rhizomorphs of) a necrotrophic parasitic Armillaria species, but oozing of sap or resin from frost cracks in the bark and living tissues of this Araucaria.

Gerrit,

Can you explain this a little? what is the differance between saprotrophic and necrotrophic? :confused1:

Sorry...Still learning!

Ray: as mentioned above. They aren't native. Another common name for them is the Chilean pine.

I'll be having Ed and his chipper in. Not one I'd like to push into my little greenmech!

I may be having more weekend jobs on due to college so I'll give you a bell for any I get. That's just made me think of one actually!

What's monkey puzzle wood worth? This is about 20" or so diameter.

Whitby Jet

You are right. Interesting how it gets washed up on our east coast even though chile is to the west of us. Then again, it doesn't matter which way you go as you'll get to it either way!
