Hedging

we've planted quite a few nice Prunus lusitanica (Portaguese Laurel)hedges I know it's a laurel but it's tight and a nice dark green hedge. Alos Griselinia littoralis makes an excellent light green evergreen hedge - I've one outside the office here which is constantly fresh looking - however it depends on your location as in some areas they got wiped by the cold this year. Elaeagnus ebbingei - again I've got this in my garden and its going great. Most of these are available from Johnsons of Whixley. Escallonia as someone else mentioned is go but again suspectable to the cold depending on your location. You could get a good beech or hornbeam hedge at 5ft - can't remember if you said it had to be evergreen though.

thanks for all the suggestions, the hedge will be in sandy soil, quite shaded. the soil doesn't look to great it was quite heavily planted will pine tree's being part of thetford forest. I like the look of Griselinia, any suggestions on the best planting mediuum? mushroom compost, standard compost or just some root feed?

Escallonia and Griselinia are not an option in Ireland anymore. Lots of dead hedges here between cold Winters and disease. Portuguese Laurel is a fairly safe bet (for now).

Depends on your location. On our Coastal and high ground sites these two varieties came through the winter fine. In the centre of Belfast and inland low level sites got wiped. It seems to have been a combination of not just the cold but more importantly the continued damp freezing conditions that killed them as it was colder at our yard which is 650ft above sea level than it was where the Gris. And the Escallonia were killed. Just for the record our cordyline and phorniums survived also.
