The OP might have been responding to the clients demands regard extent of the pruning,I have seen apple trees hit a lot harder than this,(amongst others),& I bet a lot of us have done a HEAVY reduction reluctantly,rather than remove.

As a stand alone do as you see fit for the tree type of prune it is not above critical comment I agree.

its not the prettiest thing i have to say! although it could have been worse!

 

i did a couple of plums this week, one had been topped and butchered a lot and to get it looking any better i had to cut it hard, looked very sorry after it but the customer was pleased. they wanted it topping like the conifers next to it anyway! The one at the front was tickling phone lines so i took a lot of the long growth out and reduced the width and it did look good, no cut thicker than 3", even then, the ones that were that thick there was only one or two that had to be taken as they interfered with the driveway space.

To be fair, in his first post on the forum he says he is a landscape gardener. I've seen qualified tree surgeons do worse than that.

Silver Leaf

 

Silver leaf affects, pip fruit and stone fruit. Pip fruit heavy cuts should be made in dormant season. Stone fruit heavy cuts should be made in growing season. Both can be combated by painting heavy cuts with one of the following: Santa, mercury based, cankerex, trozane mixed with emulsion or the old favourite, arbourex. Stone fruit pruned in dormant season can lead to bacterial canker and silver leaf.

 

By the way I was walking behind Adele the other day when I noticed that a piece of paper had fallen from her pocket, it turned out to be her shopping list, it read simply: "salad"
