i dont drive round in a big red truck with lights and sirens and a hose putting out fires, so why should they be allowed to try and bodge felling a tree. :001_rolleyes:

:congrats::congrats: Well put, we all have a skill the fire service is rescue and fire not tree surgery. Just because they are firemen doesn't mean they should be doing this they should assess the situation and decide that it was safer for them to get a professional service in. The police do it when a tree falls across a road.

Is that what you call tree surgery?

Looks like a couple of blokes making a tree safe to me.

Nope i call that a bunch of firemen not doing it right or safe. They should of assessed the situation and decided that someone with a sufficient skill set should make it safe quickly, efficiently and safely.

The fire service do what they can untill help arrives, a few years ago a tree fell across one of the main roads in Cambridge, by the time we got there the police had closed the road, the fire service were there tackling a 70ft chestnut with an axe. . . funny as it was, they were doing what they could with tools available. if they sat there doing nothing people would still mock them for that

its not like they have tree surgery advertised on their trucks, or are competition

they wernt doing tree surgery, they were trying to make a tree safe, the emergancy services are there for our safety too

So not safe or quick

Under 5 mins, area cordoned off with tree industry standard tiger tape and no one hurt

Are they allowed to knock a job back?

Now thats speculation as who knows what they did with the debris? Im sure that would take it over 5 minutes? If they did this until a tree surgeon arrived i would kind of been thinking why not wait and let the tree surgeon do it. He knows how he want the tree to come down. Just my observation. Im just pointing out that everyone seems to complain about gypsies not doing it right and gardeners having a go. Yet here i see something i would put in the same category yet people seem quick to almost praise them because there firemen. :confused1::confused1:

Wow that was painful. Do they have safety cones in the UK for securing a work area? I wonder if that safety tape was HSE approved?. Wonder how they disposed of the trunk/limbs afterwards?. At least here in the states most fire departments have at least one chain saw to work with and usually one person to work it.

All we have to go on is the evidence before us and I saw no injury so no one got hurt. I am pretty sure if the vid had an injury on it they would have included it, nothing like gore to get your web counters spinning.

It’s my guess that someone though the tree was unsafe and that the fire crew were told to make the tree safe, I can see no other reason a fire crew would be having at a tree. They would hardly have moved it away would they, that’s way beyond make safe. As far as “let’s wait for a tree surgeon” goes, as before, DO they have that option????? I think not, firemen do what the watch commander tells them to do and if he gets asked to make the tree safe then that’s what happens.

As far as comparing this with others, well it hardly bears comparison, let’s not forget that others are on a price for the job, these lads are on a salary. I am pretty sure they would be glad to relinquish the job to someone else but till that happens they muck in as they are told to.

If you have an issue with the emergency services dealing with the odd bit of tree work you need to start complaining to the people higher up, this was just a bunch of lads doing the best they could with the tools at hand.

How would you fare in the critical eyes of a professional if we asked you to extract an accident victim from a mangled car with a hacksaw?
