If it has no shear pins how is the system protected from overloading? Do Tirfor make them without shear pins!

 

Don't know how but yes my 5 ton tirfor has no shear pins and it can't be over abused on the handle, trust me I have had fat guys with scaffy bars making grunty noises

 

Some handles are the weakest link, they have a crimped section that is the weak spot .

a simpson petrol capstan, easier to carry with no cables and alot easier than using tirfor. I use both .

There are some small ratchet winches, rated at 2 tonnes pull, on eBay for about £10. Would these be any good for occasional use?

cranky things and certainly wouldn't want to rely on doing anything too risky with it, but for a tenner they have their uses.

Absolutely , I used one Tuesday to dismantle a large poplar safely.

Those little pullers are great for tilting track chippers when some clown manages to pull the tracks off!!! That tree in the pic looks like it will fell with felling bar or wedges!!! Or is it me!!

This be they. Dead quick and easy to set up but they have a short cable so they're only good where a short pull is needed.

I bought a 4 ton (supposedly) one of these for £20. Use it for pulling stumps. I've not had an issue with it. Could do with its reach being more than 10ft though!

 

Good if you ripping up small connies with something close to anchor to. The release mechanism is finicky though.

Mine has a spring-loaded catch for the ratchet wheel that locks in the open position for releasing. It helps a lot because, as you point out, two hands just aren't enough otherwise.

if you go for the hand winch option a good choice is to look on ebay for a ACE winch me and a few friends have bought them now £150 you get a solid well built winch with 20meters of cable

 

and we really have tested pulling trees over with it, pulling stumps out, pulling cars out of a ditch in the ice never let me down yet 1 of my best buys so far

 

i was thinking about 1 on the front of my tranny but i dont think i want to add more weight to it as it is

 

They look pretty decent. I was thinking of getting winch on front of my vehicle, but something like that might be a better option. I could just rig it to my tow hitch which is rated to 5000kg when I need to use it and stow it in the back when not. Better than having electric winch nicked!
