Stump grinding prep

Something ive wondered while ive been grinding stumps, is it beneficial to dig away the stump first or do you just go right in and grind the soil too? i know the cutters are carbide so should stand up to a little bit of soil, but mainly to clear away stones or anything not too good for the teeth.

Cut the stump as low as you dare and grind away, sod digging away soil!

I remove any big surface stones, and if its in a rockery I would remove more stones, as many as possible but I wouldn't dig soil just to get small stones out.

What he said. I missed out the bit about removing obvious stones!

 

Also theres usually two of us grinding at work, so when one is grinding the other keeps an eye on the stump, if i spot a big stone being unearthed i signal to the operator and reach in to pick it out.

fair enough, hindsight is a wonderful thing, had to do 7 stumps and dug as deep as i was grinding on each one, added a while onto that one!

 

looks like what ive got lined up will be a lot easier than i thought. Nice one

should have a bit of a dig, there's more than rocks down there you know. (not my mishap,) just visited someone elses site when this happened.
