Small Echo's

ms150 was a nice saw, very light slightly quicker in the cut and bit better anti vibs but its about £180 more expensive!!! so it depends on how often your using it

agree with Chris I would like to get a go on a 543xp but this isnt going to be in this class of saw.

Cheers, Ta.

£180 would go a long way towards a second small echo too. Shame our local Stihl dealer wouldn't entertain a demo saw.

It will be interesting to see how the 543 feels though as it should be a good chunk lighter than the 550, and the 550 is fairly slender.

I think for the sort of work a tiny saw is going to lend itself to, the 550 is far too agressive - it's fantastic for thinning but for a bit of formative pruning it's like trying to crack a nut with a sledgehammer :001_smile:

242 or 42 doing a good job but hardly any lighter than the 550.

First day out with the little back handle Echo pruning young oak and singling out elm and sycamore clumps.

Very positive overall - so so much lighter than the 346xp (4.1kg versus 6.8kg fully fueled) and perfect for pruning. Slightly higher vibrations than I'm used to, but the tiny weight means I'm far less fatigued at the end of the day than with the 346.

Couple of funny quirks - came set with the idle far to high and you can turn up the oiler to the point that it empties the oil tank 10 minutes before the fuel runs out.

I would certainly recommend it!

What was it like on fuel? One of the reasons I might get one is I run my saws on aspen and need to cut the fuel bill!

The 2012 model 280wes is supposed to be 30% more efficient than the old model. I am guessing that is why you can run it out of bar oil on the max setting.

Very good really. Usual 40-45 minutes per tank but the tank is only half the size of that of the 346xp. However, if you are cutting more than 4 inch branches or stems routinely, it's a bit too slow. It is however the perfect formative pruning saw.

Got myself an echo 280wes. Had it in the woods cutting hazel coppice today. First impressions are good. I mean it is way less powered / slower than my 346 but boy is it light!

To be honest I had a hard time taking it seriously it is so light . I feels like a toy!

Anyway it did well. I have put a Oregon 91VXL chain on it but still not the smoothest.

I might be tempted to put a smaller bar on it. A carving bar looks like an option but is it really going to work for coppice / small tree felling? Or are they only for carving?
