I've tried a lot of things but never managed to keep the sapwood white.

You may be able to use a clear polyester type varnish.... But I always find the sapwood goes a little yellow no matter what.

Lovely bit of wood by the way

Not sure, wall hanger it was an off cut ,still got the main stem I posted on lukes thread to plank there was a lot more colour in that base... Tempted to sell the stick but after that bit came up so nice think I'm gonna keep it! Will see if they have any polyester type varnish at store , what about bees wax?

I suggest a lacquer, cellulose or acrylic, I think you need to stop the air oxidising the wood, otherwise as you say the white sapwood will yellow, and the orange heart wood will darken.

That is a stunning piece of timber Matty. Sand the hell out of it with finer and finer paper, then use a clear satin varnish, several layers, letting each layer dry completely and using very fine wire wool on it between coats.

It will keep its colour, but it will be varnished, which i am not personally a fan of.

Cellulose sanding sealer works well, spray then sand and spray again. Then use a acrilic laquer on top. I've only used this combo indoors so don't know what it is like outdoors.
