So if I am reading this right, you are saying that I receive an old saw and have £200 to spend on it to repair it and make enough cash to give me something for doing the work. It may work if the saw can get by with just a piston, a non OEM P&C kit is hard to find and an OEM one will burn the £200 and more even before looking at the typical sprocket and side cover replacement.

 

£200 and an old machine for one of my refurbed ones is perhaps about right - it all depends on condition of the machines - some of the ones I have done are in my photo album on this site.

I think this could work, if you could find the right supplier for the parts,

how many people just bin their old saws.

Have a recycling collection service. Save on the land fill.

On the machines that are beyond repair strip them for the spares.

Re-furbish the pull starts, save the handles.

How many people drop there saw at the end of the day when they are tired and trying to finish that job.

Cheap second hand parts.

I think you have just described the saw business on ebay - there are a few saw breakers - it is a shame when they get hold of 254s and 262s - great saws and worth repairing!

For the smaller saws its probably not worth it due to the price of parts, but an 88 or3120 maybe.

 

I know that in many busnesses spare parts are marked up 500 - 1000%. This is why so many decent cars are written off simply due to the cost of a few parts.

 

 

Maybe Jonsie will tell us the cost of an ms200 in spare parts, every last nut and bolt, I'll bet its over a grand. Not Jonsies fault... thats just how these things are priced.

Probably quite right - I used to buy and sell all saws including the Chinese poop but after 6 months came to the conclusion if I was going to tear down a saw and do the business on it then I would rather make a bit for my hours of labour rather than make £25 from a McCulloch!

 

I now concentrate on MS200/020T, 026/ms260, 350, 345, 357 etc and have some older big 80cc saws - just can't afford to have a few £500+ saws hanging around but am happy to service these - done a couple of 066/MS660s recently - usual suspects.

 

I always do my best to keep the spares cost down by not taking the easy - "replace and hang the expense" option!

Seems, like your agreeing with my proposition in one paragraph and disagreeing in the other, which is it? Granted some saws would need more attention than others...My 200 needs a sprocket and new threads in the pull start side of case ( a strap fixed that) and a piston wouldn't hurt.

pistons are cheap by the looks of thnigs, however mine looked fine when i took it apart 6 months ago.

less than £100 on parts there, doesn't need much more, a bit of jif on the plastics maybe a fresh pull cord and I think most would be happy, i don't care about the broken chain brake handle:001_tt2:

1) you provide a doner saw and £200 - You receive a refurbed saw (not your own one back) and I get £200 plus a saw in need of work.

 

2) you provide a doner saw and £200 and I do the refurb on your saw and return it fixed.i.e - my servicing payment is made up of what is left of the £200 after buying spares.

 

No 1 is better from my point of view as I know I am receiving £200 and the knackered saw has a value

No 2 is risky from my point of view as the dodgy saw could need many spares leaving me with low payment for many hours work.

 

Think this is as clear as I can make it but am open to supplying a refurb saw in exchange for a saw that needs work and some cash.

Just stick your old 020 on ebay, you will get £150+, add the £200 and your not far of a nice new saw.

But when you put it liek that Skyhuck, i never see working 200's go for less than £200 on ebay that plus not even another £200 would get me a new one so...a refurbn would have to be my saw + <£150 to be worth it. Guess your best sticking to selling them to homeowners rather than pros.
