LPG Tipper??

I did used to know of an LA who fleeted up with LPG, the lads hated it! Drop in power, reduced mileage between fills and hassle getting to the right station. Half the time they were left on petrol! EA run some of their fleet on LPG as well and they could only use one brand of garage so they were constantly going out of their way to fill up.

 

Some years ago I ran a 4.2 Range Rover and it beat the newer shape RR with BMW diesel power for grace, pace and economy! You can't beat a V8!

 

hmmmm, maybe back to diesel then... we pay the highest fuel price in europe in north scotland, and its very painful on the wallet!

Has anybody got an LPG/Dual fuel tipper?

 

Are there any benefits over diesel, cost wise?

 

None whatsoever, emissions included

 

We're looking to get a crewcab tipper and have been considering an LPG vehicle, but wonder if the cost of fuel works out much cheaper owing to the fact you get less miles per gallon running on LPG as opposed to regular diesel.

 

Can anybody shed any light on this??

Going from a higher thermal efficiency CI engine to a SI engine on lower CV fuel than gasoline is a step backwards imo in spite of what "THEY" tell you. Potential bomb as well. Lower CV SI engine will produce lower torque so will be poor at towing and hence mpg will worsen over the cross-over point.

 

We'd be looking to purchase a second hand vehicle with the gas side already fitted, and it will be used mainly for commuting a crew of three too and from site, covering approximately 4000 miles a month!

This is what made me think of LPG to cut down the running costs, but another concern is lack of power, as it will need to tow a chipper now and again.

 

Yep, LPG is a low density fuel in energy terms whereas derv is the highest.

 

You'd be better off looking at a fuel pump mod and / or fuel preheater enabling you to run on high CV SVO - 80p a litre from morrisons or less from a cash and carry.

i'd rather run on derv than bio-diesel, just change oil and all the filters regularly, keep vehicle in tiptop condition mechanically and drive sensibly. no surprises then. if you have different drivers -work out the mpg and get them to compete against each other to drive the most economically with a big breakfast every week with the savings:thumbup1:

can you not cut svo with unleaded say 25% petrol to 75% svo and run that thru a transit diesel engine without the preheater? I have heard stories to that effect but been too scared to try it myself.:confused1:

 

i believe you can use up to 2500 litres of svo per year, as fuel, before you have to pay fuel duty so if you can get oil at 80p litre it is worth thinking about.

Ooh no, not with gasoline; paraffin or kerosene if you must thin svo down but if your vehicle has a bosch inj pump just 10% diesel will do. If it's lucas pumped forget it - v fragile pump - some pump info here:

For what its worth.. In a previous life I was a courier doing over 100,000 miles per year. My fuel costs were through the roof, I had an LPG conversion done by a company in Huntingdon, I think it cost me about £2,500.00 I halved my fuel bill over night and paid for the conversion within 3 months. The power reduction was negligable, but with a full tank of petrol and lpg I had a range of over 800 miles. The MPG was slightly less with gas if I can remember was getting 33-35 with petrol and 28-30 with gas, but gas was 30 pence per litre. My mechanic also said that the oil when changed was like new!! I changed from every 10,000 mile service to 15,000 so there was a saving again. With regard to garages selling gas, I never had a problem even when I went to stay on a friends estate near Abernethy, found a service station at Bridge of Avon? Its also possible to fill at home using conventional LPG bottles, just by a hand pump off fleabay and turn cannister upside down to get liquid rather than gas.

 

The one downside that I had was that they dont allow gas vehicles on Eurotunnel due to the dodgy installations performed on the continenet particularly Italy and former Eastern block countries. Therefore I had to contend with bobbing about outside Dover docks in a force 10 gale for 5 hours!!!!

I have been smoking around in my 'new' 2001 LT35 cab/chassis for a week its got a petrol/lpg conversion by Tickford. I am having a drop side fabricated for it in a week but giving it some use to see how it goes and if it needs anything.

 

There is no noticable drop in power when i run on LPG, but the tickover/idle is a bit lumpy. There may be a drop in power when loaded only time will tell but so far i have been very impressed with it running on LPG.

 

It cost me £30 to fill the LPG tank, there are 2 places here on the IOM that sell it but one of those is central. It cost me £0.93 a Litre which i feel is worth the hassle of driving an additional 5 mins to get! £0.93p verses £1.48 it is this that caused me to choose this LT35 as the basis for my Log Delivery Vehicle.
