The land Rover Forums aren't as friendly as here..

 

Thoughts on this to stick a tipper on:

£3995 + VAT

G reg. so 1990

130" ex Rapier vehicle

The engine had frost damage so replaced with Perkins 4203 out of an ex MOD Dodge van with 50,000 miles

Front WARN winch that works

 

From the LR forums the perkins has a mixed response. Plenty of torque, but pretty agricultural...?!

If it runs and parts are readyly available it looks like a reasonable deal. You do not buy a land rover for cheap motering, you buy it so you can go most places and not get stuck. There are alot of land rover snobs out there, who only want expensive shiney parts for their land rover so that they can show off at the office.

I have owned a couple of land rovers with 4203’s but it was a decade ago when the agricultural plodding nature wasn’t as obvious as now.

 

The Perkins is a strong engine but its heavy and a bit of a donkey. Depending on how it’s geared the Perkins may hold the top speed back a bit. It will drop speed on the first hill it sees.

 

The winch is a bonus though.

Yeah well worth a punt. A said the 4203 is very agricultural, but will pull a house down, albeit slowly. gear it a bit higher and it will be fine. Good winch. The rapiers all had the warns.

For nearly £5k then whatever time/costs for a tipper you'd be better off waiting for a tipper on ebay. One went for 6.5 recently.

£4k for a 21 year old 130 plus £2k for the new body and a cheap paint job is a tad high I think Ben, especially with the engine conversion. I know that good 130 single cabs are as rear as hens teeth but I would hold on for something a tad newer and mainstream.

 

I saw a lovely brand new double cab 130 in the agents in Solihull ready done with tipper but I'll warrant the price was tidy too!
