really/so the seargent that got best part of 30k with training and a 4x4 supplied paid it out of his own pocket?thats not what he told me....:001_rolleyes:

Mate, I got all that money, a 4x4, chipper and tipping trailer. Plus a stunning blonde lady from The Swedish Forestry Service on free loan for two years as my groundie.

All my climbing kit was provided the day I handed in my uniform along with a £1000 gift voucher for FR Jones.

He should have been in the RAF.

Think my Jackanory is better than his.

yep fair but when they get 30k to retrain as tre surgeons what chance do the kids have of being true arborists?

That all really depends on a number of factors: time served, rank achieved, voluntary discharge, redundancy, etc etc.

For me it was all the money I saved in the nine years that I was in, including two tours.

If the kids want to be true arborists then they'll work hard for it, as for the soldiers -maybe a bit biased here- they've probably earned a bit of cash by puttin up with all the crap over the years and the dangers involved.

The ex Amy blokes that work for me. On there first day they believed they was the dogs nads until they saw me traversing from two trees to cut a dead one.thats showed them that all the tax hand outs don't mean nothing to 20 years cutting and swinging......My groundys no more **** than any ex Amy. My groundy was showing some ex Amy lads how to tie a blakes hitch and he was doing his 30/31 :)

Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

You were hard done by Jim! The Senior Service were delivering FREE heli-logging courses on the 18th hole at CULDROSE. Only snag was, it was over consecutive weekends but that was OK because "working" over the weekend qualified us for 4 days off during the week! It was all going well until the smoke from the BBQ reduced the viz for flying so the course was extended (more mid week time off!) the options for no fly time was either surfing at Perranporth followed by a Jack Johnson gig at the watering hole (free bar) or a jello tag wrestling demonstration by a touring Swedish girls volleyball team. I miss the tough times!!

Hey - New to this forum and soaking up the knowledge.

Did 12 years in the RAF Regt '83 - '95.

Now finally settled in civvi street doing Arb work and loving it.

Based in Lincolnshire, I'm keen to hook up with local Arb crews and share a bit of work time & knowledge.

Cheers

Russ
