From the latest reports it sounds like a meltdown is already in full swing and the core has been breached. BBC news say it wont be as big as Chernobyl but i'm not so sure.

Chernobyl was particualr bad as thay had b uilt the reator with a jacket made no graphit powder which burn and float up into the upper atmosphere

I am still very much into nuclear power.

 

It's different fuel to Chernobyl and with far superior safety measures. The radiation levels are high in the immediate area and well below legal limits outside of a few miles. I wouldn't worry.

I would be but don't think they've put enough thought into waste disposal, read into the dirty building at sellafield, made me think.

Yeah that's the only concern. Surely they can just dump it in France or something.

Someone once told me that the French equivalent of Sellafield is on the Cherbourg peninsula, right at the northern tip. Don't know if it's true or not, but if my geography is anything like correct, if anything ever goes seriously wrong there, it is London that's downwind in the prevailing direction...

 

I tend to think of it this way - everyone wants cheap, green, reliable electricity. Cheap means coal (not green), green means wind, hydro etc (expensive and not necessarily reliable) and nuclear probably means a bit of all three. But it's got to be done right.
