Got a job in a garden to look at, just a bit of weeding and clearing, no tree work... regular customer, cut the customers hedge and done tree work in the past but they would like me to give a quote for a bit of weeding and clearing.

do i go for ''by the hour'' or a quote upfront?

Some gardeners i know charge £10 an hour... is that the case?

No saws are required just some green fingers...

just wondering what the average hourly rate is currentley going at the moment.

I charge £12 per hour. Other gardeners I spoke to last year charged £15 to £20 per hour per person plus £1 per bag of waste they took away or £5 for a builders dumpy bag!

Recently went to see a new client who wanted me to cut front lawn, turn borders over, clear gutters!!!!, cut rear lawn 150ft by 30ft, cut hedges, do rear borders and take all rubbish away for £7 per hour!!! Needless to say I did not accept her as a client!

trouble is your competing against people who just want to potter around in someone's garden for a bit of bear money and people don't want to pay alot.

I found it was always better to give them a price as people get put off by an hourly rate.

Perfect example one lady I went to see, I said we charge £20 an hr per man she nearly fainted!!! so I gave her a price instead which she was more than happy with......It turned out for that job we turned over £40 per man hr instead of £20.
